Immigration Guide
A green card (Form I 551) grants lawful permanent resident status in the United States. The holder may live and work anywhere in the country, travel internationally, and eventually apply for U.S. citizenship. There are four primary pathways: family based sponsorship, employment based petitions (EB 1 through EB 5), the diversity visa lottery, and humanitarian protection. Each pathway involves a petition stage, a visa availability stage, and an adjudication stage through either adjustment of status (Form I 485) or consular processing (Form DS 260).
